Most Women Want Cosmetic Surgery

More than half of women aged 25 to 45 intend to have cosmetic surgery, according to a new survey.

In the study, commissioned by women's magazine Grazia, 54 per cent of those interviewed said they "will have cosmetic surgery".

The report also found that as many as 11 per cent had already taken the plunge - undergoing procedures ranging from nose jobs and breast enlargements to "plumped up lips" and having lines removed.

Of those considering the move, 64 per cent thought that it would give them more confidence, 42 per cent wanted to look younger and 13 per cent admitted that they wanted to look more attractive to men.

But fears of botched operations were also running high, with only four per cent of those taking part in the magazine's Cosmetic Surgery Survey of Great Britain saying that the prospect did not worry them.

As many as 78 per cent said that their biggest worry was "the operation going wrong", 40 per cent feared "being in pain" and 38 per cent voiced fears about "dying under anaesthetic".

Overall appearances would seem to override safety worries with only 38 per cent of those interviewed saying that they thought breast implants were safe but 72 per cent still agreeing with the statement: "They're fine if it makes a woman happy."

Grazia's editor Jane Bruton said: "In the last decade or so, having cosmetic surgery has become as normal as having your hair done and there's no shame in doing it any more."

Indeed, only eight per cent said they would not tell anyone and seven out of 10 said they would tell their partner.

Money also appeared to be no object with respondents willing to spend an average of £5,643 on surgery - reining in spending on nights on the town, clothes and favourite food to save up for it, while 50 per cent were prepared to take out loans.

The findings were based on interviews with 1,000 woman across England, Scotland and Wales with an average age of 34.
