Hospital bag: what you'll really need to take with you
If you're planning to give birth in hospital, or even a birthing centre, you'll need to pack a bag containing everything you and your baby will need.
It's best to pack your hospital bag around four weeks before your due date, so that if your baby does take you by surprise you'll still be prepared. We've put together a list of things you should try to include.
For during labour
- Your pregnancy medical notes - most health authorities give you ownership of your pregnancy notes. They're a complete record of your medical history since the start of your pregnancy, so it's vital you make sure you have them with you when you give birth
- Birth plan - don't expect everything to go to plan, but taking a birth plan will make sure medical staff are aware of any preferences you have
- Tens machine - it's a popular form of pain relief, but most health authorities require you to rent one (try Boots). Remember to pack spare batteries
- Music - most hospitals will let you bring in your own CDs to play while you give birth (check your hospital has a CD player, as you may need to bring this too)
- Massage oil - your back and neck will become very tense. Your partner can help by massaging you
- Water spray - for your face
- Bottles of water
- Books, magazine, iPod or walkman - you could be hanging around for a long time
- Snacks - something easy to digest that will give you energy. However, check with your hospital as a few still have a 'no food during labour' policy
- Lip salve and moisturiser - your skin and lips will dry out
- An old nightshirt - something long you can walk around in; an old shirt of your partner's works well
- Slippers and socks - your feet can get cold during labour
- A watch - with a second hand for timing contractions
- Spare clothes for your partner - they could be there for a long time
For after the birth
- Dressing gown and a clean nightdress
- Going home clothes - something comfy such as jogging bottoms
- Maternity sanitary towels - at least three packs
- Disposable knickers - lots! Don't plan to wear your own knickers, as they'll only get stained - plus you'll need something much bigger than usual
- A bra - if you're going to breastfeed, choose something suitable; you can get measured for a feeding bra during your last few weeks of pregnancy
- Breast pads
- Hairbrush, shampoo and shower gel, toothbrush and toothpaste
- Camera (and film, or extra memory cards plus batteries)
- Phone numbers - a list of everyone you want to contact with your good news
- Arnica tablets - this homeopathic remedy can help with bruising
- Any prescription medication you take
For your baby
- A rear-facing infant car seat - and make sure you know how to fit and use it
- Nappies
- Clothes - at least four babygros and vests (stick to all-in-ones and you won't need socks)
- Going home outfit
- A hat (if it's winter)
- Blanket
- Muslin squares
- Cotton wool
- Nappy cream (try and get a trial-size pot)
