Beat your hangover

Did you overdo it last night? Don't worry, help is at hand!

One of the main causes of that hungover feeling is dehydration, so drink plenty of water throughout the day. Alcohol destroys vitamin C and vitamin B complex, so a vitamin supplement such as Berocca may help.

Even if you can face it, avoid a greasy fry-up as this will overload your liver. Baked beans on toast is a much better breakfast option as beans are high in protein and release sugar into the blood slowly, helping you to a steady recovery.

Alternatively, have a bowl of porridge with sliced banana. Porridge oats neutralise acidity and are easy to digest, while banana will slowly raise your blood sugar level. If you're feeling too queasy for breakfast, try taking ginger to relieve nausea and stimulate the appetite, which can be impaired by alcohol.

If you really must try a hair of the dog solution, choose Buck's Fizz. The orange juice will replenish depleted vitamin C and the fizz will help ease your tummy.

If you still can't face food, you could get active and sweat the alcohol out of your system. Though if this sounds far too much like torture, just have a nice hot bath instead!

Damage limitation
Planning a big night out? Read on to see which drinks contain the most calories and which will give you the worst head in the morning.

Vodka: 55 calories per shot
Alcohol content: 40%
Hangover risk: Very low. Vodka contains fewer impurities than dark drinks due to the filtering process. Result? A less severe hangover.

Gin: 55 calories per measure
Alcohol content: 40%
Hangover risk: Low. While not as pure as vodka, gin is another good option as it contains fewer impurities than darker coloured drinks, such as port and brandy.

Champagne: 95 calories per glass
Alcohol content: 10-15%
Hangover risk: Medium. The bubbles in champagne cause alcohol to be absorbed more quickly, making it harder for your liver to break down the toxins.

Red wine: 85 calories per glass
Alcohol content: 10-15%
Hangover risk: High. Red wine contains a chemical called tyramine, which causes headaches in some people.
