Enlisting the help of a top personal trainer is how. In fact Coleen credits her great new look down to one woman: Elise Lindsay.

“I’d found it difficult in the past to stick to an exercise regime,” she explains. “But with Elise that’s changed. Within weeks of starting her programme I had loads more energy and could really see the difference in my figure.

“When I went on holiday I couldn’t wait to try on my bikini – when you’ve worked that hard for something you feel really proud of the results!

“It’s not just my body shape that’s changed while training with Elise, but my attitude too; she gave me loads of tips and tricks on looking and feeling great. The best tip I learnt was the 30 per cent rule – follow this and I’m sure you’ll end up with a flatter, more toned stomach and improved posture so you will feel taller and slimmer too.

“I haven’t looked back since working with Elise.”

Coleen is so impressed with her trainer that she’s written the foreword to Elise’s new book, How to Get a Celeb’s Body. Luckily for us, Elise has agreed to share with us some of the tips and tricks that she used with Coleen - so we can all get that A-list look.

A-list eating tips

When you eat out, it is very easy to have more calories that you intended. Simply having a side order of bread and butter will pile on way more than if you had eaten at home. Don’t be afraid to ask if the chef can adapt a dish to suit your needs - after all, it’s what the celebs do and little changes will make a big difference.

• Ask that a sauce be served separately so you can choose how much to have (this goes for salad dressings too)
• Ask for extra vegetables instead of potatoes
• Ask how the meat or fish is cooked and see if you can have it steamed
or grilled rather than fried
• Choose lean meats or fish to reduce the fat content

Positive posture

Ever wondered why it is that some people always look great in photographs and others don’t? It’s nothing to do with the camera, it’s to do with the way you act in front of it.

Coleen shows off her great smile and often stands with one hand on her hip, with her weight slightly on the back foot.

The 30 per cent rule that Coleen swears by: pull your abdominals in by 30 per cent when you carry out daily tasks. Imagine you are ‘naked shopping’ – in an instant you’ll pull up and in!

Elise’s top tips for posture

• Do be aware of how you sit – don’t slouch, and use your core to sit straight
• Do carry weights such as shopping bags evenly on both sides of the body
• When carrying children, use your core muscles and don’t always have the baby on the same hip
• Swap the phone receiver regularly between ears to avoid neck tension
• Change your shoes often – they can determine how you walk. Avoid constantly wearing high heels
• Sit at a PC square-on
• When bending down, bend your knees and keep your tummy tucked in
• Go ‘naked shopping’ or do other activities with your abdominals engaged
• Observe your body posture in front of a mirror regularly – correct it
and try and maintain the good position
• Stretch whenever you feel tension build up, if you have been sitting for a while

Exercise according to your body type

You can’t change your fundamental body shape, but you can make the most out of what Mother Nature has given you by following a good diet and exercise programme. There are three basic body shapes: endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph. No one is 100 per cent one of these, but one type is usually dominant.

Endomorphs (like Vanessa Feltz) generally have a round build with big bones, large trunk and thighs and are prone to carrying larger percentages of body fat. Fat loss should be their main target so it’s important to be as active as possible. Regular cardiovascular training is essential and strength training should also be undertaken.

Mesomorphs (like Madonna) generally have a muscular build, broad shoulders, narrow waist, naturally large muscles and fast metabolism. They need a varied fitness regime - but should take care not to overdo it.

Ectomorphs (like Tara Palmer-Tomkinson) generally have a light build and narrow waist, hips and shoulders. They have a low percentage of body fat and may lack shape due to their low muscle weight. Gaining weight by increasing muscle should be your main goal.
