What's a carbon footprint?
When you drive, heat your home or take a flight, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses responsible for climate change are released into the atmosphere. The total CO2 produced by your activities is your carbon footprint.
Our 60-second carbon calculator gives an approximate indication of your personal carbon footprint. The figure is not accurate as there are many variables, such as how much you use public transport, exact length of flights taken - even the pressure of your tires will make a difference!
The personal UK average carbon footprint is 5 tonnes. Some calculators add on another 5 tonnes for indirect emissions - our share of CO2 produced by businesses and the public sector, plus the goods and services we consume.
How much is a tonne of CO2? Roughly speaking, it's enough to fill a hot air balloon.

What can you do?
The UK government has set a target to reduce our CO2 emissions by 20% by 2010. Almost half the UK's emissions come from things we do every day, like leaving the TV on standy or using the car for short journeys - which means we can all make a difference. What will you do?
