Shocking statistics

10-15 years is all that we have left to reduce carbon emissions in order to prevent further climate change, according to the world's top scientists.

16 million tonnes of carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere each day.

10,000 aircraft are in the sky at any one time. Air travel is the single most climate-destructive activity. Global air travel generates almost as much CO2 a year as all human activity in Africa.

Four trillion plastic bags are made in the world each year. It takes 1000 years for a plastic bag to break down. One billion seabirds and mammals die due to eating plastic bags each year.

10 tonnes of CO2 is produced by the average UK citizen each year, enough to fill two Olympic-sized swimming pools

The world spends £255 million running DVDs and VCRs left on standby each year.

£1.3 billion could be saved if everyone in the UK installed a condensing boiler.

The world may heat up 6.4C by 2100, causing rising sea levels and stronger storms to swamp many coastlines.

245 jumbo jets worth of packaging waste is thrown into UK dustbins each week.

What can you do?

The good news is that we can each do something about the statistics above. Switch appliances off rather than leaving them on standby, take a train rather than a 'plane, switch to energy saving light bulbs... It's amazing what a difference a few simple changes can make.
