Cycling essentials

Compared to some outdoors hobbies, cycling is remarkably easy to get started in - but it's not quite a simple as buying a bike and jumping straight on it.

There are a few accessories that will make the experience far safer and more comfortable, so we've put together a list of some key purchases you might want to make...

Giro Indicator
A decent helmet is the single most important piece of cycling kit

Helmet
Don't even think about getting on a bike without a helmet. Cycling is a lot safer than many people think, but it's not worth the risk of turning a few cuts and bruises into brain damage because you weren't wearing a lid.

There are an array of helmets on the market, with safety-approved models starting at aroound £20 and getting lighter and better-featured as they go up in price to £100 and beyond.

Giro are one of the most respected brands, and their Indicator helmet is a good basic option. It is easy to adjust with one hand and has 20 vents to ensure plenty of nice cool air reaches your head.

A snap-fit visor keeps the sun and rain out of your face a little - and the sporty styling means it looks similar to helmets worth twice the price.

Other helmet brands to keep an eye out for include Bell, Specialized, Briko and Met. Giro Indicator helmet

U lock
A good U lock will deter all but the most determined thieves

U-Lock
If you're thinking of leaving your two-wheeled pride and joy anywhere in public then a decent lock is pretty much essential. Kryptonite are the best-known brand and make some of the most secure locks on the market.

The Evolution Series 4 U lock is more than adequate for all but the highest-crime areas. It has a 14mm diameter hardened steel shackle and double deadbolt locking mechanism. There is extra proctection against twisting and leverage attacks - favoured by many thieves - and a lighted key and mounting bracket are also supplied.

One other tip: Always make sure both wheels are locked to the frame (usually by taking the front one off) and either lock the saddle to the frame with an additional chain or take it with you. Also never leave your bike locked outside overnight, or there's a good chance that components will be missing when you return.

Waterproof socks can prevent a wet ride becoming a miserable one

Waterproof socks
A wardrobe staple among year-round mountain bikers, a good pair of waterproof socks will keep your feet dry and toasty in the most foul of conditions.

SealSkinz are the best-known brand - and although expensive their performance really does justify the outlay. A waterproof and breathable membrane makes them entirely impervious to the elements, but doesn't make your feet sweaty at the same time.

The company offers an selection of different socks, but the Mid-Thermal model is probably the best all-round model for cycling - offering a little more cushioning than the basic model but not being too bulky.

The CycraGuard's rugged looks will appeal to mountain bikers

Mudguards
It seems obvious that, once the weather gets mucky, you'd want mudguards on your bike.

But that's not the way a lot of cyclists see it, as they have become rather unfashionable among "serious" cyclists over the years.

But don't take any notice of fashion, because modern mountain bike mudguards don't weigh much and really don't look naff at all either. And there's nothing worse than a cold and wet back with a "skunk stripe" when you're only five minutes into your ride.

A good example is the motocross-inspired Cycraguard mudguard set - which comprises of front and rear chunky dual-compound plastic guards and come in black, white or "titanium" colours.

They are designed to attach without damaging paintwork or interrupting cable routing, with extra care taken to make sure they are easy to fit and that they do not gather mud in extremely gloopy conditions.
