Commuter bike tests: Hybrid bike

Smooth mover: The Specialized Globe Sport is capable of taking the odd pothole

Hybrid
It may be bit predictable but, yes, the hybrid seems to be the best bet for the city commuter if you don't need a folding bike.

Specialized's Globe Sport has enough strength and suspension to deal with the rigors of the roads while it is light enough to keep you moving at a fair lick - at those times when you have an uncongested, traffic light-free piece of road in front of you.

And on those occasions when I decided to take to a woodland trail or tow path to avoid the traffic it did not feel out of place. The raked front forks and the suspension seat post ensure that it can take on the average rut and tree root without grumbling.

The Globe Sport has a good spread of gears to deal with all commuter conditions, the brakes are strong and responsive and the ride smooth. And you are in that all-important high riding position.

OK, so it doesn't look that cool, compared with, say, a mountain bike or a racer. But at least it hasn't got a wicker basket on the front...
