Three types of machine make up the majority of adult bike sales, and we'll explain each in a little more detail...
Road bikes
Also commonly known as the 'racer', the classic Tour de France-style bike features dropped (curly) handlebars and a lightweight frame, wheels and componentry.
Road bikes might have fallen out of favour with the young, but are still the best choice for getting around quickly on tarmac and so are ridden by many commuters.
Their thin tyres and low weight combine to offer thrilling acceleration and enough speed to keep up with the traffic around town - leaving you feeling like Lance Armstrong when you see off a milk float at the traffic lights.
You can expect to pay £300 to £400 for an entry level road bike, with the machinery getting lighter and quicker as you pay more. Diminishing returns set in as you head toward the £800 mark however, and £1,000 will buy you all the bike you'll ever need - unless you're planning to go pro.
