Japanese artist causes sensation with banana sculpturesRex

On first glance this intricate sculpture of the sea god Poseidon looks like it has been carved from some sort of ivory or wax.

In fact the sculpture is entirely made from the humble banana - peel and all.

Japanese artist Keisuke Yamada has become an internet sensation after he posted pictures of his fruity artwork online.

The artist has tried his hand at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Marge and Homer Simpson, Davy Jones (from Pirates of the Caribbean), as well as numerous silly faces.

Yamada says he has to work quickly, as if he doesn't get his sculpture finished within 30 minutes then the banana starts to go brown.

The artist doesn't let his creations go to waste either - once he's photographed his sculptures he promptly eats them.
