But if you're soon to be wed, you might want to forget your ivory meringue as more and more brides are opting to a black wedding.Research by industry experts has revealed that a growing number of women are turning to tailored black dresses for that special day.

A spokesman for bridal website Wedding Path, told the Daily Mail: "Black is a leading trend for the fashion-forward bride who wants to make a bold statement.

"Black dresses embellished with lace and pearls are an attractive choice, but you can also consider black piping or embroidery over the classic white dress."

Odd as it may seem, the blushing bride in white idea is a fairly recent one. In fact it was Queen Victoria who started the trend when she wore rich white silk to marry Albert in 1840, thereby sparking the desire for the colour associated with purity.

But in Spain, a black dress signifies that the bride will remain faithful 'until death do us part'.

For those of you who aren't quite ready for the full black wedding, though, there are ways to keep up with the fashionistas.

Black piping, embroidery or long chic black gloves will show that you've got at least one finger on the pulse, without sacrificing your dream white wedding.
