Doctors find female Viagra... by accident
Filed under: Sex
It's been a while coming (no pun intended), but doctors believe they may have found the answer to flagging female libidos.
But their discovery was purely accidental as they were originally testing the drug as an anti-depressant.Though it was effectively useless as a happiness enhancer, the drug's unexpected side effect would surely brighten any girl's mood.
Trials of the drug, flibanserin, revealed that women experienced more "satisfactory sexual encounters", greater desire and less bedroom stress.
Three clinical trials later and the drug is said to significantly improve sexual desire and satisfaction for the ladies.
Flibanserin differs from its male alternative in that it works on the brain rather than the genitals, says US researcher Professor John Thorp from the University of North Carolina.
It's discovery, though, is remarkably similar to that of Viagra, which was originally tested as a heart medicine before volunteers revealed its pleasing side effect.
Anti-depressant it may not be, but an increased libido and greater satisfaction is certain to put a smile on many a girl's face.
